The new construction and renovation project for the School of Business at the University of San Diego will collocate all business school functions into one interactive, engaging, flexible and social Knauss Center for Business Education complex.  The school’s goal of engendering ‘changemakers’ for globally minded learning and impact permeates through the design of the new construction and renovation complex.

Transparency, program flexibility and visibility permeate interaction between faculty, small business community, and their global connections through nature, pattern, daylight and views. The graphic building patterning was developed in parallel with the branding, furniture, and interior design to assimilate school identity within a dynamic ‘business ecosystem’.

Building patterning was integrated into the wall graphics, building identity signage, ceiling systems, as well as the extensive terrazzo flooring. The detailed terrazzo inlay pattern with bronze edging integrates throughout to activate social and community focused spaces of the Atrium and Entrances. Linear terrazzo patterns across public corridors enhance building views and transparency through spaces, while providing a healthy and resilient environment.

The University of San Diego simultaneously completed the ground up construction of the new 87,000SF Knauss Center for Business Education, and the renovation of adjacent 80's era 46,000SF Olin Hall, resulting in a single complex connected by skybridge. With the University's emphasis on maintaining 16th Century Spanish Renaissance design, terrazzo was the perfect material selection for this project.

Terrazzo throughout the entry level creates a visual harmony by physically connecting two buildings with this one material. At the atrium bronze inlay dividerstrips create a pattern derived from 16th Century Spanish Renaissance architecture, further connecting the building to the campus heritiage. The natural light in the atrium perfectly highlights the beauty of this material, design, and installation.
